末期がんが判明した保護犬のバケットリスト

This ridiculously handsome hound is Smoke, a ten-year-old guy we’ve had here at AWLA for about a month. Yesterday, we got some sad news about Smoke - he has terminal cancer. We don’t know how long Smoke has left with us - it could be six months, or it could be just a few weeks. What we do know is that Smoke deserves to live the rest of the time he has left in a home, with a family that loves him. We are hoping that someone will come and adopt this big, goofy boy and give him as much love as they can during his last weeks and months. Until that time comes, we are starting a Bucket List for Smoke! We hope to start crossing items off his bucket list now, and that whoever adopts him will keep it going. Here’s what we have on his Bucket List so far: - find a forever family - go on a hike - eat ice cream - go to the beach - have a birthday party - ride in a fire truck - eat a cheeseburger - have breakfast in bed - meet a celebrity - ride in a police car and bay with the sirens - get a fully body doggie massage - go camping - meet Santa - be on TV - jump in a big pile of leaves - get a professional photoshoot - go on a road trip - get his own Instagram account - ride in a convertible - get a huge box of toys to play with and share with his shelter friends! - Visit Washington Nationals Park (maybe throw the first pitch?) So, please, help us spread the word about Smoke by telling all your friends and family. We are looking for an adopted for Smoke, but would also be open to a fospice home, where he would stay with a foster family until his condition worsens. You can come visit Smoke anytime during our regular business hours! Of course, we would also love for you to help us fulfill his bucket list! We’ve already got a Smoke #pupdate for you, with two pieces of good news! #1 - thanks to one of our awesome supporters, Smoke has already checked an item off his Bucket List! She brought him a cheeseburger, which he was SUPER happy to devour (he wanted to do this Bucket List item again but we told him this was a very special treat and a one-time-only item!) #2 - Smoke is in a foster home for the weekend! We’ll keep you updated on his adventures (this means he won’t be back at the shelter til Sunday or Monday). Thank you to everyone who has shared his story and offered their support! You’re all amazing!

Smoke Rides in a Fire Truck!

Smoke crossed another item off his bucket list today - he got to ride in a fire truck! Thanks to Arlington County Fire Department he went for a ride around the neighborhood, with his head out the window and his ears flapping in the wind (of course we had a firm hold of his harness the whole time)! Smoke is still looking for a forever family to bring him home and show him lots of love for the last few months of his life. If you are interested in adopting Smoke, please come and visit him at the shelter! He loves having visitors and will be so pleased to meet you! We have been overhwhelmed by the amazing amount of support and love you all have shown to Smoke over the last few days, We have received so many offers to take him on outings that we are working on a sign-up schedule for him. We'll keep you posted on that! Smoke #Pupdate!

Smoke crossed another three items off his bucket list today! The Washington Nationals invited him to tour the park (they even gave him his own Nats leash and a little bit of ice cream!), then he visited The Arlington County Police Department for "coffee and a donut", and a ride in a police car. Last but not least, Smoke crossed off his most important item - he found his new family! Smoke was adopted today and is going home to a brand new mom, human little brother and a canine big brother. We wish him all the best! We also want to thank all of you who showed him such love and support since his diagnosis. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful community here in Arlington Co and beyond. We hope that when you're ready to find your new best friend, you'll come to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington!
